CASTLEPOINT, COASTAL STATION AND SETTLEMENT unravels the history of Castlepoint, from its early discovery by Kupe and Captain Cook to the many and varied personalities that came and went through an iconic hill country station. Interwoven with hundreds of contemporary and period photographs, illustrations and drawings, this is truly a classic account of a wild and isolated coastal community.

Chapter Summary

Part one is a short history of Castlepoint, from its discovery by Kupe, Captain Cook and William Colenso to its establishment as a port and landing station.

Part two ‘Personalities of a Coastal Farming Community’ is told mostly in the words of Peter and Nan, the ‘Master’ and ‘Chatelaine’ of Castlepoint.

Part three ‘Geology and Land Development’ is the story of the Castlepoint formations and the development of Castlepoint Station, a remarkable golden period of taming the land in the 1960s, 70s and 80s.

Part four illustrates the larger Castlepoint community, including the Castle Point Lighthouse, the historic beach races, the fishing industry and the wider fabric of the coast.

Part five places Castlepoint Station in the 21st century and its future as a modern hill country station.
